Palliative care is specialized medical care focused on providing relief from the symptoms and suffering associated with serious illness, particularly for patients nearing the end of life (National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, 2023). In elderly patients, palliative care addresses not only physical pain but also psychological and social aspects of aging, improving their quality of life. Nurses, as frontline caregivers, play a crucial role in the delivery of palliative care, yet their knowledge and practices regarding this care are often inadequate (Adeyemi et al., 2023).
At Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Katsina, nurses are involved in providing palliative care for elderly patients with chronic, terminal, or advanced-stage illnesses. However, the quality of palliative care provided depends on the nurses' understanding of pain management, end-of-life care, and family communication (Bello et al., 2024). The effectiveness of palliative care practices at FMC, Katsina, needs to be assessed to ensure that elderly patients receive appropriate care in their final stages of life.
This study aims to evaluate nurses' knowledge and practices regarding palliative care for elderly patients at FMC, Katsina, to determine areas of improvement and propose strategies for enhancing palliative care practices.
Palliative care is critical for elderly patients facing terminal illnesses, yet many nurses lack adequate knowledge and training in providing this type of care (Fadipe et al., 2023). At FMC, Katsina, the effectiveness of palliative care for elderly patients has not been thoroughly evaluated, leading to concerns about suboptimal care and patient suffering. Without an evaluation of nurses' knowledge and practices, it is difficult to identify gaps in training and areas for improvement in palliative care.
This study seeks to evaluate nurses' understanding and delivery of palliative care to elderly patients at FMC, Katsina, to ensure that they receive compassionate and effective care during their final days.
This study will focus on nurses at FMC, Katsina, and their knowledge and practices regarding palliative care for elderly patients. Limitations may include variations in individual nurses' training and experience and the challenges of measuring the quality of palliative care provided.
